Abstract

We compute the local density-of-states associated with the coherent oxygen breathing motion of three and four membered rings in vitreous silica. While some individual rings have sharp responses with widths as small as 8 cm-1, the system as a whole will not have as sharp a response as observed experimentally in the D1 and D2 "defect lines" unless the rings are very homogeneous in shape.
