Abstract

The Nevado del Ruiz eruption of November 13 provided an opportunity for investigating the dynamic response of a well-developed volcanic hydrothermal system to a major plinian eruption. This study summarizes changes that have been observed in the chemical and isotopic compositions of acid-sulfate-chloride thermal waters at Nevado del Ruiz in the 37 months following the November 13, 1985 eruption, and discusses possible relations of these changes to the behavior of the volcano.
