Abstract

The concept of learned helplessness is applied to organizations. It is argued that certain cognitions, behaviours, and affective responses constitute a syndrome of organizationally induced helplessness. Self‐report data from 206 nonsupervisory production employees suggest that global helplessness, universal helplessness, hopelessness, defensiveness, and a lack of job satisfaction, job involvement, and organizational involvement indeed covary, and that this syndrome is positively related to a lack of autonomy and negatively related to the predictability of task operations.
