Abstract

Based on the social network perspective, this study examines specific attributes of founder-CEOs which facilitate alliance formation in venture start-ups: prior experiences and external visibility. Results from negative binomial regressions indicate that a founder-CEO's total tenure at previous jobs and total number of previous workplaces positively affect the formation of alliances in the venture start-up. It is also found that media exposure of a founder- CEO is positively associated with the formation of alliances. This study provides theoretical and managerial implications in that exploiting individual network and media exposures of a founder-CEO can be an effective strategy to facilitate successful alliance formation.
