ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This work was supported by a research grant (GM-05829) from the National In&it&~ of Health, U. S. Public Health Service, and by a National Institutes of Health Predoctoral fellowship to one of us (S.M.H.), 1967-1970. We are indebted to Dr. R. K. Robins for samples of 2’-O-methyladenosine and 2’-0-methylguanosine and to Mr. J. Wrona for determining the mass spectra.

N2 - We have obtained low-resolution mass spectra under as uniform conditions as possible at 20 and 70 eV for the following ribonucleosides: cytidine, uridine, adenosine, 5-hydroxymethyluridine, 2-methyladenosine, 2′-O-methyladenosine, isoguanosine, xanthosine, 2′-O-methylguanosine, N2,N2-dimethylguanosine, N6-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)adenosine, N6-(3-methyl-3-butenyl)adenosine, ribosylzeatin, N6-(3-hydroxy-3-methyl-butyl)adenosine, ribosyldihydrozeatin, and N6-(3-methyl-2-butenyl)-2-methylthioadenosine. All these ribonucleosides are components, or possible components, of tRNA. The spectra are intended as reference spectra for the structural confirmation of known nucleosides from tRNA and for the identification of unknown, modified nucleosides by comparison of their fragmentation pattern with those already recorded.
