Abstract

The article set forth the operating principles of frequency-modulated laser ranging for use in applications where high measurement accuracy and reliability are essential, but where invasive sensor devices cannot be used. This digital sensor technology is intended to simplify accurate, noncontact measurements of distance and volume. This article describes how design obstacles were overcome in developing such a laser, and how feedback from potential end-users contributed to bringing the sensor to market.
