Abstract
An overview is given on the first experiments probing the mid-infrared range in optimally and underdoped YBCO on ultrafast time scales. Results of the experiments lead to the conclusion that an ultrafast excitation of the electronic system enables the breakup of both condensed pairs and a second type of carriers most likely described by preformed pairs.
