Abstract

The authors use a tabulation of diversity within grid squares 275km on a side. Local diversity of Cicindelidae parallels grid diversity, and the latter can be related to climate (precipitation). Grid analysis provides a graphic portrayal of the spatial pattern of diversity within a region. However, grids pose difficulties as units of analysis: adjacent grid cells are pseudoreplicated samples from a region, and it is difficult to apply statistical tests to grid data. Grid analyses do not incorporate habitat heterogeneity within grids, and grid diversity does not distinguish alpha and beta components of species richness. -from Editors
