Abstract

Analyses the statistical properties of size distribution for floodplain lakes of the Amazon and Orinoco rivers. For the Orinoco floodplain lakes the relation between area and perimeter is examined. The consistency of the statistical properties are evaluated with the fractal model and the usefulness of lake size distribution as indicators for geomorphological patterns of processes of floodplains is explored. The data for the Amazon was obtained from SLAR X-band imagery, and the Orinoco lakes were measured on 1:100 000 scale maps compiled from aerial photography. -K.Clayton
