Abstract

The quality of measurement with an LDA system is dependent on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the signal from the scattered light detector. This SNR depends upon the characteristics of the source of scattered light (usually particles in the flow) as well as the laser power, optics configuration and photodetector characteristics. The purpose of this paper is to present a procedure to calculate an estimate of the SNR of an LDA system for the purpose of establishing feasibility in a given application or for implementing improvements. The effects of laser power and optics are modeled accurately for the ideal case, but approximations are used in evaluating the effects of light scattering which are very complex. Even so, estimates within a factor of 2 or 3 are possible in most situations where the scatterers are not uniform. (from paper)
