Description
PCH CARE Program Contract PCH CARE Program Contract We will use serum samples from a biobank of 150 adolescents to examine whether non-traditional cardiovascular biomarkers are related to traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors (BMI, waist circumference, fasting lipid panel, glucose, and insulin. Non-traditional risk factors will include LDL and HDL particle size and distribution (Quantimetrix Lipoprint System), measures of oxidized LDL-cholesterol (Enzymelinked immunosorbent assay Mercodia), and advanced glycation endproducts (Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit TBD). Elevated cardiovascular risk will be defined according to the International Diabetes Federation criteria for metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents and glucose tolerance will be defined according to the American Diabetes Association by the use of a 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test. We will also explore the association between atherogenic phenotype and non-traditional cardiovascular disease biomarkers and insulin resistance in this population. Insulin resistance will be estimated using the homeostasis model assessment and the whole-body insulin sensitivity index of Matsuda and DeFronzo.
