To allow interoperations among home devices, a platform on which any household devices can register their existence and use an interchangeable message format to communicate with each other will be required. To enable appropriate services at each individual household, applications have to be composed and code are generated automatically depending on the available equipment in each home and the preference of home residents. In fact, with diverse devices and connectivity, we can observe the emerging trends of smart home systems: 1 Service-oriented: evolve from single device control to integrated service control to serviceoriented home management. 2 Composite: evolve from atomic device to static composite service to context-aware dynamic composite service. 3 Context-aware: need to detect and react to context for the whole management system. 4 Scalable: need to have efficient data access and storage mechanisms to support huge volume of time-varying sensor data. 5 Robust and Reliable: need to schedule the service running and solve the resource conflicts brought by the resource racing of the composite services. And be able to recover from the failures in the system. During past few years, the ASU research team and the ETRI group have collaborated on the research of service-oriented architecture for smart home applications. The digital home interoperation platform from ETRI and the process-based service-oriented infrastructure for distributed embedded systems from ASU provide a unique opportunity that both research teams can look for potential synergy among them. This collaborative research will be likely result in the critical mass necessary to produce significant research development in home information aggregation and context inference prediction technology. Year 4 & 5: Home Information Remote Aggregation and Context Inference Prediction Technology Development It is our research goal to investigate and develop an ontology based service framework for context-aware applications in smart home environment. The current evolvement of smart home service management will be studied and the approaches to handle the events, schedule the service execution, manage and coordinate the resources in a smart home based on different contexts will be analyzed. Finally, proper authoring and testing tools will be developed for the context application composition and application logic processing.
