Abstract

We describe the design and performance of a beam line installed recently at Brookhaven intended primarily for high resolution photoemission studies on solid surfaces int he photon energy range 8-250 eV. The monochromator is a 6 m/160° toroidal grating instrument having three gratings 288, 822 and 2400 g/mm designed for a resolution as good as 0.2 eV over almost its entire range and considerably better than this at low energies. The photoelectron spectrometer is based on a hemispherical analyzer with a specially designed zoom lens, multianode detection, two rotational degrees of freedom and is capable of an ultimate resolution of 20 meV in energy and {precedes above single-line equals sign}0.01 A ̊-1 in momentum.
