Abstract

The authors describe the design and performance of a beam line installed recently at Brookhaven intended primarily for high resolution photoemission studies on solid surfaces in the photon energy range 8-250 ev. The monochromator is a 6 m/160 degree toroidal grating instrument having three gratings 288, 822 and 2400 g/mm designed for a resolution as good as 0. 2 ev over almost its entire range and considerably better than this at low energies. The photoelectron spectrometer is based on a hemispherical analyzer with a specially designed zoom lens, multianode detection, two rotational degrees of freedom and is capable of an ultimate resolution of 20 Mev in energy and less than equivalent to 0. 01 A** minus **1 in momentum.
