X-Ray Detector on Flexible Substrate for Elemental Mapping

Abstract

This is a light weight X-ray detection system with the solid state detector and readout electronics integreated on a flexible substrate to enable better performance and portability. Its novel shape improves signal to noise ratio and the capability of this design to be built into large area arrays using flexible substrate allows anaylsis to be carried out on large samples at a faster rate without having to move the sample.It finds wide variety of applications for example, instructional purposes in schools, industrial applications, homeland security and also military applications. This is primarily designed for remote applications in the field for the inspection of munitions, namely, foreign bullets. A conventional bullet has a brass casing and when scanned, should pick up zinc and copper signals. Presence of a potassium signal alsong with zinc and copper signals suggests that the bullet has a gun powder incorporated. On the other hand, presence of plutonium or uranium signals suggests that the bullet is probablly a dirty bomb or nuclear weapon.
