Abstract

The selection and adaptation of the optimal set of measurements for process control is discussed in detail. The identification of the smallest measurements set to achieve a desired accuracy, leads naturally to the concept of the variable order model which is discussed within the framework of the self-tuning regulators. By invoking the duality between the estimation and control problems, the concept of the variable manipulations structure is introduced. A similar methodology, employing a sequential treatment of the alternatives, can be used to identify the best structure of manipulated variables.
