Abstract

Part of this essay was presented in response to Susan Hurley's presentation, 'Perception, Dynamic Feedback, and Externalism ', at the American Philosophical Association, Eastern Division meeting, Washington D.C., 29 December 1998. I am grateful to Susan Hurley for her comments on that occasion. I also thank Ted Belledin and the Consciousness Discussion Group at Arizona State University.
