Abstract

A unified theory is developed to describe the behavior of composite laminates with transverse matrix cracking. The model is designed to be compatible with the refined higher order theory that uses a third order displacement field for accurate representation of the effects of transverse shear. Thus, the model not only describes the effects on the extensional stiffness of composites with matrix cracking, but also predicts the effects on shear stiffness, bending stiffness and transverse shear. The effect of matrix cracking is determined using a finite element model of a representative crack, and can be implemented into the structural model by means of reduced laminate stiffnesses. Results show this model provides a consistent level of accuracy for a variety of laminate materials and configurations, with various combinations of matrix cracks.
