Abstract

We report the first ultrafast study of TaTe2, utilizing MeV-scale ultrafast electron diffraction to reveal rapid photo-induced melting of its low-temperature trimer super-structure. Density-functional calculations indicate intra-trimer charge transfer as a trigger of this transformation.
