Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the loading, geographical distribution, and chemical and physical properties of both natural and anthropogenic atmospheric aerosols and of the processes controlling their production, reaction, transport, and ultimate removal - the 'life cycle' of tropospheric aerosols. We highlight here the effects of aerosols on climate. It is hoped that this chapter convinces the reader of the importance and complexity of aerosol processes and the interactions of aerosols with other components of the atmosphere and with climate.
