title = "Tropes of the crusades in Indonesian Muslim discourse",
abstract = "This paper concerns the ways in which tropes of the Crusades are used in contemporary Indonesian Islamic discourse. It is based on the analysis of contemporary textual materials and on ethnographic research conducted between 1978 and 2009. It is argued that tropes of the Crusades and now linked to an Islamist discourse that is Anti-Western and Anti-Semitic and that they are employed as mythological archetypes that link the colonial past with contemporary Indonesian politics and world affairs.",

note = "Funding Information: 1Jakarta: Serambi, 2006 The Indonesian title translates “Wars of the Cross: Islamic Perspectives.” On September 12, 2006 a Google search for the Indonesian title returned 504 hits. Nearly four years later it is still a “best seller.” 2I have done extensive ethnographic research among Indonesian Muslims of almost all theological and political orientations. I would like to thank the Center for Asian Research and the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict at Arizona State University for financial support. Fieldwork conducted in the late 1970s serves as a baseline. It was supported by the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars, the Social Science Research Council and the Graduate College Research Board at the University of Illinois.",
