We would like to thank Alan Bray, Lawrence Krauss, Glenn Starkman, Rainer Trebin and Alex Vile&in for useful comments. We are grateful to the Isaac Newton Institute for the hospitality and for providing a unique environment where this work was initiated and to the Aspen Center for Physics where it was finished. T.V. is grateful to the Rosenbaum Foundation for support during his stay at the Isaac Newton Institute. The work of T.W.K. was supported by the US Department of Energy grant DE-FGOS-85ER40226 and the Vanderbilt University College of Arts and Sciences,

N2 - A realistic extension of the electroweak model is proposed in which electroweak magnetic monopoles and Z-strings appear as topological defects. The ensuing cosmology is discussed and it is pointed out that electroweak strings and, more generally, light superconducting strings may yield a significant flux of antiprotons in our galaxy.
