Abstract

The thermodynamics of reactions involving chromium are summarized, emphasis being placed on binary and ternary oxides at high temperature. Comparisons with other elements are made, and some geochemical generalizations suggested. Topics discussed include: metallic Cr and its oxidation; Cr compounds at room temperature; Cr2O3 and its solid solutions with Fe2O3 and Al2O3; systematics of formation of ternary chromium oxides, especially spinels; solid solutions containing chromium in spinels, garnets, and pyroxenes; shear phases (Magnéli phases) containing chromium; and chromium sulfides.
