Abstract

In this second part of a two-part article, the literature on plasmid transfer rates is analyzed critically. First, the authors estimate the plasmid transfer coefficients and consolidate them from a variety of experimental results. Then, these estimates are combined with a simple biological-process model that includes plasmid content and transfers. The model is then used to evaluate the importance of plasmid transfer for controlling the action of the populations in a biological process. Finally, the authors suggest future research efforts involving plasmid transfer in biological processes.
