Abstract

The molar enthalpy of dehydration of hydrous cordierite (Mg2Al4Si5O18.nH2O) was determined by transposed temperature drop calorimetry and is a linear function of H2O content indicating an ideal enthalpy of mixing for H2O in cordierite. The molar enthalpy of dehydration is 41.8 ± 1.6 kJ/mol at the reference conditions 25°C, 1 bar, and gaseous H2O. This value is the same as the molar enthalpy of vaporization for water (40.9 kJ/mol) within experimental uncertainty and is considerably less than that found for the dehydration of zeolites (61-84 kJ/mol). -from Authors
