Abstract

We present the largely twentieth century history of the discovery of the significance of Pappus and Desargues for the axiomatics of geometry. Their significance is followed in projective, affine, and orthogonality contexts. There is an extensive bibliography, that should allow the interested reader to take a comprehensive look at the research literature on these axioms.
