The synthesis of b-oriented TS-1 films as a catalytic membrane on chitosan-modified α-Al2O3 substrates is discussed. TS-1 films result in molecular sieving effect and catalyze oxidative reactions, including selective oxidative reaction of alcohols, hydroxylation of aromatics, oxyfunctionalization of n-hexane to hexanols and hexanomes, and photocatalytic oxidation. Chitosan will serve as the structure-directing matrix to induce the orientation of the crystal grains with the b-axes perpendicular to the substrate surface. The final TS-1 film is applied to a multiphase membrane reactor as a catalytic membrane, which possesses a competitive reaction rate and an extremely high selectivity for the alcohol product in the oxyfunctionalization of n-hexane in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The finding is expected to help produce other oriented zeolite films that will extend the application of zeolite films and membranes in the advanced materials and microreactors.
