Superlattices as millimeter-wave devices

    Abstract

    Superlattices have long been proposed as possible negative resistance devices. Here we discuss some results of an ongoing study of their potential for such applications. We focus on one particular type of superlattice, the lateral surface superlattice, and one particular frequency range, the millimeter-wave range. We find that there may be difficulties associated with the lateral surface superlattice as a negative resistance diode for high millimeter-wave frequencies. These difficulties are also expected in other superlattices as well and are indicative of the problems faced in superlattice engineering. We additionally discuss another novel possibility for millimeter-wave applications of superlattices.
