Abstract
This paper explores the feasibility of controlling subsynchronous oscillations (SSO) by the modulation of series compensation capacitance banks in transmission lines. Two transmission systems were selected for study. These were the benchmark systems that are recommended by the IEEE committee on subsynchronous resonance. The Electro Magnetic Transient Program (EMTP) was used to simulate these systems for studies. Different control strategies were developed to switch the series compensation capacitor banks in these test systems. These strategies were modeled as closed loop systems using Transient Analysis of Control System (TACS) in EMTP.
