Abstract
I here present a brief overview of the population genetic processes shaping within and between levels and patterns of variation and divergence in viral populations - emphasizing the importance of accounting for the constantly operating evolutionary processes of genetic drift (as modulated by infection dynamics) and purifying selection, prior to quantifying periodic evolutionary processes such as positive selection (associated with, for example, drug-resistance).
