Abstract

A common problem in process control is that some process outputs should be controlled but their measurement would involve slowly operating expensive analyzing equipment. When the implementation of the usual state estimation devices (Kalman Filter, Luenberger Observer) cannot be justified because of large modelling inaccuracies and increased cost, a linear combination of measurable outputs can be used to infer the unmeasured outputs. A criterion based on the process dynamics is developed to decide what measurable outputs should be used in the static estimator. The method is illustrated on the model of a Fluid Catalytic Cracker and a Double Effect Evaporator.
