Abstract
Different aspects and advantages of radio frequency identification (RFID) in the paperboard packaging industry are discussed. RFID has several advantages over traditional data collection via bar code. The cost of implementing RFID is likely to be reduced if the tag can placed inside the box at the time of package fabrication. It is hoped that RFID implementation will decrease the overall supply chain costs and inprove fill rates. The retailers will likely see fewer stockouts with RFID. The challenges of meeting RFID mandates by Wal-Mart and the Department of Defense has been intimidating.
