Abstract

The field of spiritual neuroscience is characterized by the use of neuroscience methods to identify the neural correlates of spirituality. This entry orients readers to this new, emerging field. A number of topics are discussed including the philosophical antecedents that created intellectual space for the field, difficulties in defining and operationalizing spirituality, methods that serve to distinguish this area of study, and populations that have particular relevance to spiritual neuroscience. The entry concludes by reviewing the field’s contributions to the mind-brain issue and noting some methodological challenges and future directions.
