Abstract
This paper presents some simple criteria to monitor the performance of multivariable controllers. Their derivation is based on the small gain theorem using estimates of the uncertainty in the process model. Large values of such estimates indicate the need for controller retuning. Encouraging preliminary results have been obtained from applications to simulated data. Although adequate excitation is necessary to allow conclusive statements, the excitation requirement is quite modest compared to system identification.
