Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate the sexual behaviors of men who were attempting to purchase sex on the street. The requested sexual acts, the amounts offered, and the occupations, ages and incomes of 530 men who were arrested while trying to solicit sex from undercover policewomen were studied. Analyses of the data revealed that the average price for any sexual act was from $20 to $25, with the most requested acts being coitus and oral sex. The typical "John" made less than $15,000, worked as a professional, as a laborer, or in clerical/sales jobs, and was younger than 34 years. A pattern indicating a shift in sexual preferences with age was found.
