Abstract
RIF decisions can result in improved morale and set the stage for even higher productivity than before the RIF. Associates believe the best performers should be retained. The question is how to accomplish this. The key is to use participative management for the retention decisions. Participative management, when based on a structured. multiple rater consensus method like OJQ, can support an evaluation system that is: -standardised for all associates - performance based - understandable and perceived as fair and free from bias - participative - supportive of the supervisor's coaching role - resource efficient - designed with safeguards to individual rights.
