Abstract

Block matching motion estimation is a key component in video compression. Typical applications include HDTV, multimedia communications, video conferencing, etc. In this paper, we present a review of block matching based motion estimation algorithms. These algorithms are classified into three categories, namely fast algorithms, layered structure algorithms and inter-block motion field prediction algorithms. They are compared with respect to estimation accuracy and computational complexity. In addition, various matching criterion are also reviewed.
