Abstract

A Raman investigation of the phonon structure of GaAs-AlAs superlattices is presented. The results can be understood in terms of the lattice dynamics of thin ionic slabs. Two kinds of modes are present: 'bulk' slab vibrations of LO- and TO-character, confined in the respective slabs, and interface vibrational modes which produce a macroscopic electric field in the two constituent layers. The coupling of the superlattice phonons with the electronic system is analyzed by studying the resonance behavior of the Raman spectrum.
