note = "Funding Information: RESEARCH into the causes and mechanisms of the brain failure of Alzheimer's disease (AD) research is at a critical stage of development. The research community is beginning to understand the fundamental mechanisms of the disease. There are in place the intellectual and technical tools and the infrastructure to progress toward the goals of early diagnosis and arresting the progress of the disease. The present technical knowledge and the infrastructure of research resources could enable us to reach the goals of slowing the progress of Alzheimer's disease by 5 years within 5 years, and by 10 years within 10 years (see ref. 1; 5-5, 10--10 Plan). To reach these goals promptly, there need to be added resources. There was concern among the members of the Working Group that current funds for Alzheimer's disease research are so limited that only 10%-15% of the grant proposals for Alzheimer's research submitted to the NIH and judged by peer review to be worthy of funding are actually funded.",
