REIMAGINING THE GOALS OF HL PEDAGOGY THROUGH CRITICAL LANGUAGE AWARENESS

Abstract

This chapter presents arguments for reframing the seven established goals of HL education within a critical framework in order to achieve the ultimate goal of HL Education: intergenerational heritage language maintenance. After summarizing the research on the guiding instructional goals in HL education, the chapter presents a reconceptualization of each goal within a Critical Language Awareness (CLA) framework with examples of how to apply them in the classroom. An eighth instructional goal - to facilitate students’ CLA development as curricular content in HL courses - is added to help develop learners’ full understanding and knowledge of all the aspects encompassed within CLA. The chapter ends with an overview of avenues for future practice and research directions in this area and suggestions for further reading. Although the focus of this chapter is Spanish as a HL in the United States, it will also help inform those interested in HL instruction more broadly, regardless of language or context.
