Abstract
Reduction of certain esters and acetals to ethers (5 to 6, 9 to 10, and 9 to 11) with diborane-tetrahydrofuran has been studied in detail. The experimental results were also interpreted in terms of possible mechanistic pathways for ester → ether, ester → hemiacetal, and acetal → ether reduction reactions using boron hydride reagents.
