N2 - This study re-evaluates the molar morphology of Procavia antiqua m order to determine whether fossils attributed to this species are similar to P. capensis, the modern rock hyrax. Two metric and several non-metric features of the dentition are recorded for all known specimens of P. antiqua from South Africa as well as a large sample of modern hyraxes. Specimens of P. antiqua differ from the modern rock hyrax in the shape of the maxillary molars, in particular, the relative length of the ectoloph. These results support the validity of P. antiqua as a taxon distinct from P. capensis and are used to present a scenario for the evolution of diet in the procaviid lineage.
