Abstract

We have employed Raman scattering to measure the spinwave frequencies of various rare earth orthoferrites in order to determine both their in-plane and out-of-plane anisotropy constants. For YFeO₃, for example, we observe modes at 11.0 cm^-1 and 17.3 cm^-1 which imply an in-plane anisotropy field of 1047 Oe.
