Abstract

This paper compares the radiation characteristics of forward and backward leaky waves in one-dimensionally periodic metasurface leaky-wave antennas (LWAs). Two LWAs are designed to form a fan beam along +30° and 30° from broadside at 15 GHz. It is shown that the LWA-employing backward leaky waves has a higher scan-angle range (θ = 55° as compared to θ = 34°) and a slightly higher gain within the bandwidth of 13-19 GHz.
