Abstract

Quinolinic acid (QA) is a metabolite of tryptophan that binds to N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the central nervous system. Overstimulation of these receptors leads to excitotoxicity and cell death of neurons harboring these receptors. QA has been widely used in animals to model particular neurodegenerative disorders, especially Huntington's disease.
