Quality improvement of the product development process using performance metrics

Abstract

As the international marketplace has opened up, companies are finding that both their competition and customer bases have expanded greatly. In addition, the rate of technological growth continues to accelerate, leaving many products out-dated in a relatively short time. Companies must meet both of these challenges in order to remain competitive. This requires an efficient product development process, one that is flexible and able to meet its customers' diverse requirements in a timely manner. This paper examines product development and, in particular, looks at the use of metrics in evaluation, control, and improvement of the product development process. Specifically, it is shown how metrics can be used to evaluate the progress. performance, and quality of development activities. Issues involving data collection are described, and the paper concludes with a discussion of organizational issues and a case study.
