Abstract

The dependence of quadrupole strength in the γ*p → δ+ (1232) → pπ0 transition was discussed. Experimental values for the ratios E1+/M1+ and S1+/M1+ over the range Q2 = 0.4-1.8 GeV2, were extracted from precision p(e, e'p)π0 data using a truncated multipole expansion. It was found that the typical (worst) absolute truncation error (including model dependence) was 0.3(0.7)% for REM and 0.1(0.5)% for RSM over the Q2 range of this experiment, with the error generally increasing with Q2 due to the larger relative importance of neglected nonresonant multipoles.
