Program Fidelity

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Researchers have begun to recognize that the success of any program depends largely on the intensity with which the intervention is implemented. Specifically, researchers identify the fidelity of the program’s components as a significant factor in achieving outcome success. Program fidelity has been typically described as “a concept informing whether treatment services are delivered consistent with program theory and design”. Program fidelity is important because it ensures program outcomes can be attributed to the implemented treatment. Researchers can ensure this by evaluating whether changes occurred during program start-up and over the course of the program. The provision of adequate training manuals, training of facilitators, and supervision of program delivery are also recommended to enhance program fidelity. Establishing program fidelity is a primary objective of process evaluation and offers a rigorous and scientific strategy in determining program efficacy. Therefore, coupled with maintaining program integrity, program fidelity documentation can guide program improvements and accountability for practitioners and researchers.
