note = "Funding Information: The papers that follow in this special issue of Early Education and Develop- ment reflect the findings, conclusions, and recommendations that were developed from the conference “School Readiness: Scientific Perspectives” that was held in Columbia, Maryland on January 24-26,1992. This conference was sponsored by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau Research Program, and was one of several conferences recently sponsored by the Bureau to promote scientific inquiry in topics relevant to maternal and child health concerns. Dr. Woodie Kessel, the Director of the Division of Systems Education and Science at the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, provided the initial thrust for the School Readiness conference, and much of the success achieved in the proceedings is due Dr. Kessel. Gontran Lamberty, D.P.H., Director of the MCHB Research Program, was also instrumental in the development of the conference proceedings.",
