N2 - This paper addresses the theoretical development, use and application of PITTLEACH, a computer program conceived to simulate the processes of landfill stabilization. Since the physical, chemical and biological stabilization phenomena occurring in a landfill are very complex, highly variable, and difficult to predict or reproduce in detail, the objective of the work reported herein was to develop an operational model which sufficiently simulates the most important mechanistic features of these processes, and is able to be validated by operating data. Such a model can be useful in understanding, designing for and managing the processes of stabilization at sanitary landfills.
