Abstract

In this work, the floating platforms for offshore wind turbines are briefly reviewed and parametric resonance and energy transfer in Suction Stabilized Floating (SSF) platforms is studied via analytical techniques and compared with the experimental results. Suction stabilization increases the effective metacentric height or righting lever and increases the stability margin. This paper discusses this suction stabilization effect and investigates its influence on the stability and parametric resonance in a floating platform. Similar to ships, these floating platforms show a heave-roll coupling. Simple mathematical models describing the effect of parametric resonance and stability margin of suction stabilized floating platform are derived and the analytical results are verified using experimental techniques. The concept of SSF platforms can be used to design platforms for offshore floating structures.
